The Surgical Staff hail from Happy Valley - middle of nowhere central Pennsylvania , an area infused with equal parts beer and football-themed amusement park (being the home of Penn State) and rural, backwoods pastoral bliss. Influenced by earth-bound indie folk and alt-country along the lines of Will Oldham, Ryan Adams and Cat Power, as well as epic, cloud-soaring art-rock like Spiritualized and Arcade Fire, The Surgical Staff reside in the realm of orchestral power folk. The original members of the band (Joe Beeney, Joe Santamaria and Aaron Mitchel) met in 2005 while starting different doctoral programs in Psychology at Penn State. Michael Stevenson (drums) and Brooke DiLeone (piano, vocals) joined in 2006 and Kristine Marceau (violin) united with the band in 2008. After a hundred or so live shows, and building a moderately sized, but devoted following, the band self-released their first album, Love Songs for the Falling Leaves, in the summer of 2010. Love Songs is an album about love in this midst of ugly, old ghosts. Understandably, there's melancholy and yearning, but there's also satisfaction and bliss on display here. All of these emotions are hard-earned as well. Joe Beeney, the band's main song-writer, grew up in Illinois, Wyoming and Northern California in chaotic poverty. The album is littered with hints of autobiographical back stories growing roots to a life lived in trashy motor homes, amongst the overstuffed ashtrays of weeklong meth parties, and the loneliness of utter neglect. It's an album about the possibility of love in the presence of those ghosts.
